John Dick’s work is an investigation into the "Inner Gaze"—the psychological tension between the observer and the observed. Working primarily in charcoal and graphite, the practice seeks to deconstruct the biological form to find the emotional truth beneath.
The Practice
The artist’s current figurative work is developed under the mentorship of contemporary artist Tanmaya Bingham. This practice follows a decade-long career in music photography, notably providing album and promotional portraiture for British singer-songwriter Thea Gilmore.
Creative Lineage
The anatomical integrity and "surgical" precision of the work is informed by a twenty-five-year career in maxillofacial anatomy and surgical intervention. This deep intimacy with the physical structures of the face allows for the deliberate and meaningful distortion seen in his current series.
